Human behaviour can surprise us in the most unexpected ways. That thought struck me recently after watching the Malayalam movie Christy, starring Malavika Mohanan and Mathew Thomas.
The film was simple, but it ended abruptly, leaving viewers taken aback.
I’m not here to write a film review; I just want to talk about how human beings can change without warning and often behave in ways we don’t anticipate.
Christy (Film Plot): Highlights
A teenager, Roy, falls in love with an older woman, Christy, who also happens to be his teacher. She has recently walked out of a toxic relationship after her divorce.
They share a good rapport. Over time, Roy starts developing feelings for her. Things shift when Christy gets a high-paying teaching job in the Maldives.
Later, Roy reaches the Maldives as well, hoping to stay close to her. But she refuses to acknowledge him. She even tells the airport police that she doesn’t know him.
He returns to Kerala and is seen snapping pictures of a beautiful sunset at a pristine beach, smiling faintly—almost as if accepting something he can’t change.
THE END OF THE MOVIE
Questions the Film Fails to Address
If Christy had no intention of starting a relationship, why didn’t she clarify things when she sensed Roy’s growing romantic interest?
Why did she deny knowing Roy at the Maldives airport, even though her words could have caused trouble for him? She cried afterward—does that hint that she felt something too?
Why did Christy remain silent? Her marital life may have been troubled, but she was otherwise educated, independent, and earning well.
Was it wrong for the boy to fall in love with his teacher, who was older than him? He was still a student with no income, while Christy already had a career.
Christy could have continued her friendship with Roy, but once she settled in the Maldives, she withdrew completely—without even telling him whether he had done something wrong.
The question is not why she didn’t reciprocate his feelings, but why her behaviour changed the moment she started her new life in the Maldives.
If the idea of a relationship made her uncomfortable, she could have spoken the truth openly.
Not once did she clearly accept or deny her relationship with Roy.
A Thought to Leave You With
This film again reminds us that people may behave in ways we can’t predict. Someone might be your best friend today and turn their back on you later.
You may love a person deeply for a moment and feel nothing for them some time afterward.
