An Ode to Fashion TV | Our Childhood-to-Teen-to-Adult Fantasy – The Unspoken Memoir

Hi Connections!
Welcome to my weekly column (Mar 14th, 2025)! Follow & click #AskATHC #ATHCOriginal to read my previous columns.
First of all, wishing you all a colorful and wonderful #Holi.
Today, with festivity in mind, I went back to my childhood. Yes, literally! And I have no qualms in accepting the truth that #FashionTV has been my childhood-to-teen-to-adult fantasy until it completely changed its programs & visuals.
Though I’m not a fashionista, the mere thought of watching gorgeous models across the #globe walking the ramp, clad in fashionable and trendy clothes by well-known fashion #designers, often grabbed my eyeballs. So did the channel’s midnight shows, including Midnight Haute, #Lingerie, and #Swimwear. These programs often kept me awake till late at night.
At the same time, I also admit I loved watching programs like Life’s a Beach and Latin Angels on channels like NDTV GOOD TIMES and FOX LIFE.
So, all I can say is that fashion can be truly exciting as well as engaging. These programs, though for the most part remained my childhood-to-teen-to-adult fantasy, taught me a lot of things.
Among other things, they made me travel to places I had never been before, let me admire and appreciate beautiful and stunning models, taught me about fashionable and sexy outfits that I had no idea about, and made me broad-minded and accustomed to the cultures of places I had never heard of before. Last but not least, they made me familiar with the world of fashion, which has since held my deepest love, respect, and admiration for its creativity & the countless people who earn their livelihood from it worldwide.
And being a 90s kid, I am telling you about the days when internet cafes were just booming, and mobile internet was too pricey. Now that data is sold like peanuts and is almost free with your 4G/5G monthly mobile packs, things have changed.
In those days, we had to subscribe to separate data plans in addition to normal calling packs. YouTube was a place to unwind & relax—it consumed a lot of data back then, but we were adamant. Many of us made the mistake of searching for ‘those videos’ on YouTube—videos that are now available free of cost on Twitter or, as most of us do now, watch in Incognito Mode😂.
So, with the passage of time, Fashion TV in #India has changed a lot. It now mostly shows fashionable programs and content that are so kiddish that sometimes even our normal TV serials of Saas-bahus seem adultish in comparison.
My idea behind writing this column was to show how certain channels, songs, or programs unknowingly become a part of our lives, making us reminisce about the days of yore. Just as Fashion TV has evolved, so have we all.
