In the meantime, following the Amanta calendar Vat Savitri Vrat, becomes Vat Purnima Vrat and is observed and rejoiced during Jyeshtha Purnima. So, married women from Maharashtra, Gujarat and southern Indian states observe Vat Savitri Vrat as Vat Purnima Vrat 15 days later than the North Indian women celebrates the festival Vat Purnima Vrat.

Vat Savitri Vrata Katha
The account or story of Satyavan and Savitri is a subplot in the Mahabharata. King Ashtapati was blessed with a beautiful and intelligent daughter named Savitri. The King gave her the permission to choose her husband due to she was also very obedient to her dad.
One day, Savitri meet up with a young man in the jungle where she went for wondering and she was really impressed to see the young man was carrying his blind parents in two baskets balanced on either side of a stick, his name was Satyavan.
On seeing Satyavan’s devotion towards his blind parents, Savitri decided to marry him. On inquiry, the King shocked to know that Satyavan was the son of a deposed king and that he was destined to die in a year from the Sage Narada. So King refused to give permission for the marriage to his daughter Savitri but she was adamant and declares that what destiny store for her it doesn’t affect her but she will be only tie-knot with Satyavan!
On seeing Savitri love, affection and determination for Satyavan, finally her father decided to get Savitri married with Satyavan and post her wedding Savitri left for the forest with her husband Satyavan.
Post wedding Savitri was leading a happy life with her groom Satyavan. While one year passed now! Savitri gradually realized that the date Sage Narad had predicted that Satyavan would die will be coming in just three days time. So before the arrival of those 3 days, Savitri started observing fasting for her husband Satyavan, and with this fast, she used to prayed to God that Satyavan should bless with long life!
The day Satyavan was destined to die, Savitri followed him and she also reached in the jungle with him. While cutting woods from a Vat Vriksha (Banyan Tree), suddenly Satyavan fall down and get faint.
Savitri rushes towards him and embraced him to take care of him but eventually, she realized that Satyavan is dying. And suddenly she felt the presence of Yama, the god of death. She witnessed with her own eyes that the Yama was carrying the soul of Satyavan and she started following Yama.
Yama first ignored Savitri on realizing that she is following him and he thought that she must go back to her husband’s dead body. But Savitri was determined so she persisted and kept on following him. Yama tried few tricks to persuade her but nothing worked. Savitri remained adamant and kept following Yama.
On seeing Savitri Yama turned stunned and said that she is the first living being who reached to the Yama Lok despite she is alive and he also said it is impossible. Yama asked to her what she wants and Savitri said she want her husband to be alive.
Then Yama said that it is impossible for him to give back the dead as it is against nature’s law. Instead, he will give her three boons and Yama also said that but you should not want your husband life back as the boon. Savitri agreed.
With the first boon, she asked that her in-laws get back their full glory, money, and kingdom. With the second boon, she asked that her in-laws should get their son and eyesight. Finally, for the third boon, she asked ‘I would like to have children.’ Yama immediately said ‘granted.’
Then Savitri said, ‘now that you have granted me the boon of having children please return my husband as I can only have children with him only and without him, it is not possible for me to be the mother.’ Soon Yama realized that he had been tricked by Savitri, a pativrata.
Yama remained silent for a minute and then praised her, ‘I appreciate you persistence. But what I liked more about you that you still marry the person after knowing he will be die in a year.
“Go back to your husband he will soon wake up”, Yama said. Soon Savitri returned to the Vat Vriksha to see that her husband was lying dead. She started going round (pradakishna) the Vat Vriksha and she also completed the pradaksihna, Satyavan woke up as if from sleep. So finally Savitri and Satyavan were reunited.
Vat Purnima Vrat Puja Vidhi or rituals
Married Hindu women observe this festival and they worship Savitri as the goddess. On the day of the festival Vat Purnima Vrat, the married women take holy bath in the early morning which marked purification of their being and they also wear new colorful clothes, bright bangles and apply vermilion on their forehead.
They decorate one leaf of banyan in their hair. Women offer 9 types of fruits and flowers to Goddess Savitri. Wet pulses, rice, mangos, jackfruits, palm fruits, kendu, bananas and several other fruits are offered as Bhoga (offering) and observe the festival and do Puja with Savitri brata katha.
After the fast is over, and the Puja was done they consume bhogal and take blessings from the husband and elders in the house.
