Shani Jayanti is a Hindu festival which marks the birth anniversary of Lord Shani, son of Lord Surya (Sun) and Goddess Chhaya (Shadow). Shani is also regarded as ‘Chhayaputra’. Shani Jayanti is an auspicious day which is known as Shanishchara Jayanti and Sani Jayanti.
It is believed that Shani Jayanti is the day on which day Lord Shani made its appearance on the earth. Shani is considered to be the karma (deeds) guru and also Lord Shani blessed people on the basis of their Karma. He presents himself on carrying a bow and arrow, sitting on buffalo, vulture or crow.
It is believed that Shani’s (Saturn) malefic position brings struggles, disappointments and delay in success and so Shani is most feared, god. He is strict in his judgment and is instrumental in an individual’s growth, happiness, and long life.
It is believed that it will be very auspicious to perform Shani yagnya or home by those who possess Shani/Saturn cycle or Sade Sathi in their horoscope. Performing Shani Tailabhishekam and Shani Shanti Puja helps to lessen the effect of Sade Sati.
Shani is considered to be the slow but heavily influential planet that possesses results which can be had by people after constant hard work and discipline. The planet has an influence on a person’s life, death, wealth, children, legal suits, and illness. And for people, the Shani’s bless or curse everything is totally depends on an individual’s deeds in the present and even the past life.

What to do?
On Shani Jayanti, people need to worship Shani’s idol by bathing it with gangajal, panchamrut, oil and water.
The devotees need to observe fast from sunrise to sunset and the devotee can take only one meal at night after performing the puja at the evening.
Visit Shani temple and offer black sesame seeds, sesame oil, and black cloth. Black is assumed to be the Lord Shani’s favourite color as you can see the Lord Shani’s idol always in black colour.
People also need Chant Shani stotra and ‘Om Sham Shaneshchraya Namah’ (11 malas) to on the day of Shani Jayanti.
