Poila Baisakh means the Bengali New Year gradually falls on 14th or 15th April 14 every year which is marked the beginning of the Bengali New Year. In the Bengali language, it is known as the Poila Baisakh or Boishakh.

Let’s speak about what Poila Baisakh is all about? Poila stands for ‘first’ while ‘Baisakh’ means the first month of the year. As per the Bengali calendar, Poila Baisakh means starting off the New Year 1424.
Many people believe that the New Year or Poila Baisakh is indicating the harvesting festival of Baisakhi. Though, some report suggested that the Bengali calendar was first formed by Mughal emperor Akbar in the 15th century.

On Poila Baisakh the Bengali people take shower after waking up in the morning to wear the new dress. Afterwards wearing the new dress they simply visit the temple in order to pray and worship the god or simply some people organise Puja ceremony in their home too.

Businessmen also celebrate the day by starting new ledger books after they do Lokhkhi Puja (Lakshmi Puja) and also they seek blessings from priests.

Then the Bengalis do the arrangement of grand lunch which includes, Fish preparations, Chatney, Rice, Chana Dal, Vegetable recipe, Payesh (Kheer) and so on. Also, people invite their friends and relatives to come in the home as guests for the lunch.
