Onam history and significance
Onam is celebrated to welcome the demon king back in the land where he used to rule in the ancient times. For the period when the land Kerala witnessed and experienced the reign of Mahabali Kerala in that time the state only witnessed massive prosperity and happiness.
The king was regarded as very holy by his all subjects. Though Mahabali was an egoist and he battled with the Devas in order to display his supremacy. Eventually, as per the mythology, the King Mahabali defeated devas and conquered their region.
Post this historical win the King Mahabali became Lord of the two worlds. The festival Onam is the way to celebrate his victory as in the ancient times post his winning the King Mahabali decided to perform a yajna.
The King Mahabali after yajnas proclaimed that whoever comes to him and ask for anything, he would be gratified the same. The Devas asked Lord Vishnu to wage war on Mahabali and get their kingdom back.
But Lord Vishnu declined this as Mahabali was his devotee and Lord Vishnu was impressed with him. Though he thought of testing him, so he appeared as Vamana avatar (a dwarf avatar) and asked Mahabali to handover him 3 paces of land.
Mahabali agreed on it as he thought he is dwarf so he will not ask for more. But eventually the Lord Vishnu increased his size and from the Vamana avatar, he became so long that his height covered the entire kingdom of Mahabali.
Mahabali offered him his Kingdom, Palace, and Land as 1st and 2nd pace. But now Mahabali have to offer him 3rd pace but he is penniless, in that time Mahabali offered his head to the Lord Vishnu as the third pace.
The God granted him a boon that once in a year he will be visiting his land, kingdom, and people which will be celebrated and rejoices as Onam.
