As per the Hindu mythology, the day holds immense significance. Ages back, on the eve of Dhanteras, both the deities and the demons were practicing Samudra manthan. During the act of churning, Dhanwantari appeared from the ocean who was revered as the founder of Ayurveda. A pot full of Amrit was carried by Dhanwantari which represented abundance, wealth and health. So, since that day, the day is celebrated as Dhanteras festivalin Hindu religion.

Dhanteras Puja Vidhi and Timings

People perform Goddess Lakshmi Puja on the day of Dhanteras to please the deity and seek her blessings. At some places, people also worship the Mahalakshmi Yantra in order to get blessed with its powerful vibrations and welcome prosperity and happiness in their homes. There are some specific Dhanteras puja vidhi and timing on which the ritual must be performed to gain the utmost benefits and merits. It is usually performed at the workplace to seek the blessings of Lord Kuber, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati for attaining growth and success in the business or profession.

Procedure for Dhanteras Puja

Usually, the Dhanteras puja is performed by experienced Vedic scholars in order to perform it with all the necessary rituals and customs.

  • All the family members come together to perform the ritual after sunset.
  • Light a diya, preferably four-wicked, with ghee and then place a cowry shell over it.
  • The diya  is known as ‘Yamadeep’.
  • After that, sprinkle few drops of Holy water around the diya.
  • Devotees offer silver or gold coins, roli and rice to complete the Puja
  • Prasadam is offered to deities comprising of batasha, kheer and panchamrit.
  • The females of the house perform Parikrama (move around in a circle) of the diya to conclude with the ritual.

Rangolis and Purchase of Metal

It is a ritual to decorate the houses and buy new clothes, utensils or ornaments on the day of Dhanteras as it symbolizes a new beginning as well as immense wealth. On the auspicious eve of Dhanteras, women decorate their homes by making beautiful and colorful rangolis at the entrance as a symbol to welcome Maa Lakshmi and Lord Kuber. For the businessmen and for the traders, it is one of the most vital days as they purchase some kind of precious metal such as gold, silver, copper or steel on this day.

Charity, Donations and Diyas

Acts of donations are considered highly pious on Dhanteras as it brings prosperity in house. Women adorn their homes with earthen lamps after sunset. It symbolizes that negativity and darkness has been replaced by positivity, spirituality and happiness.
