There wasn’t a weekly holiday in ancient India, so in the ancient times, people never get the chance to relax a day. They used to engage in works, works and only works for rest of the week. Though, in the mind of the ancient people they used to think that like the way we celebrate festival, we should like the way celebrate the whole day on the day.

British people are the first who started Sunday as the National holiday from in the year 1843 as a holiday in India because, In Christianity, God created this world in 6 days, and the day is also the special day for them as they also organized the day as Sunday, March.

Later the rise of European powers, following Gregorian calendar and their colonization of foreign countries lead to the concept of Sunday as a rest day, that is why Sunday Mass prayers in the churches. This one is also a divine day.
The reason behind observing a holiday on the day in India is with the influence of the British as they used to rule India and apply and organized so many rules and regulations in the country as per their theory. And India is indeed has accepted many written systems and living style of the Britishers. Or else, there is no official holiday remarked in constitution of India.
As per different views suggest the idea of the day being rest day in most of the countries around the world, but the Gulf countries and Muslim countries consider as Friday is a weekly holiday and on this day they participate in mass prayers.
