Aretha Franklin was suffering from the advanced pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, her publicist confirms the same to the media house, PEOPLE. She was 76.

“In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds,” the family of Aretha Franklin told in the statement.

“We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters, and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”

Funeral arrangements are going to declare in the coming days.

For years, The Queen of Soul had struggled with her health. A source told PEOPLE Monday that Franklin had taken a turn for the worse so her demised is touted as somehow very natural or “imminent.”

“She has been ill for a long time,” the longtime friend told PEOPLE. “She did not want people to know and she didn’t make it public.”

A musical phenomenon who crossed musical, racial and gender barriers, Franklin actually started her vocal career as a teenager, singing gospel hymns in her father’s Detroit church.

Aretha Franklin actually had very humble beginnings and eventually,  Aretha Franklin scaled to the very heights of stardom, scoring her first national chart-topper in 1967 with a sweltering version of “Respect” with her hard works and dedication.

Since then, the artist has notched 77 Hot 100 chart entries and earned an amazing 18 Grammys out of 44 nominations. In 1987, two decades after her first No. 1, Aretha Franklin turned to be the first woman to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and gradually she was named AS the Greatest Singer of All Time by Rolling Stone.

A source close to the singer said to an Associated Press on Monday in order to confirm that Aretha Franklin was “seriously ill,” though they did not provide any additional details as of now this is said that the death is the result of the singer’s illness.

Showbiz 411 reporter Roger Friedman was first to report the singer was “gravely ill,” said that the family of Aretha Franklin was already “asking for prayers and privacy.”

“I am so saddened to report that the Queen of Soul and my good friend, Aretha Franklin is gravely ill,” wrote Local 4 Detroit news anchor Evrod Cassimy on Twitter Sunday. “I spoke with her family members this evening. She is asking for your prayers at this time. I’ll have more details as I’m allowed to release.”

In 2017 the month of February, the Queen of Soul told a Detroit TV station that she was retiring from music that year. “I will be recording, but this will be my last year in concert. This is it,” she said, though Franklin admitted she would perform at “some select things.”

In spite of her failing health in recent years, Aretha Franklin marked her return to the stage in August for what would be her final public performance at the Mann Center in Philadelphia.

She also sang at the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s continuing Vision benefit gala in November of 2017. In spite shows of the Aretha Franklin was canceled she was compelled to cancel March and April of this year because of her health issue.

“Aretha Franklin has been ordered by her doctor to stay off the road and rest completely for at least the next two months,” Franklin’s management said in a statement at that hopeful she will be release her next album, entitled A Brand New Me, in November.

In summer of 2011, Franklin performed live at a number of concerts and talk shows where she promotes her album, Aretha: A Woman Falling Out of Love”,  and she said that “I feel fabulous, really,” she told PEOPLE. “And I’m so thankful to all of the people who said a little prayer for me. People at the check out line in the market were telling me that they prayed for me. It’s amazing how beautiful people can be.”

On Dec. 1, 2010, the news went viral that Aretha Franklin was situated in the hospital for unspecified surgery. Only the night before, Franklin was nominated for another Grammy, for her duet with Ron Isley, “You’ve Got a Friend.”

By the middle of that month, as news spread from family members that she was suffering from pancreatic cancer, Franklin was recovering at home, and somehow in coming days, the matter resolved.

In November 2010 canceled all tour dates and personal appearances for the next six months which was the reason of the fans tension as they were missing Aretha Franklin.

And once Rolling Stone has said, “Aretha Franklin is not only the definitive female soul singer of the ’60s, she’s also one of the most influential and important voices in pop history.”
