Winter presents a variety of challenges to your exercise regimen. Not only does the cold play a major role in putting you off going to the gym or even out for a run, the holiday cheer often leads you down a path of munching on rubbish. So, how on earth can anyone keep themselves motivated to exercise during the long, dark, cold winter months? Well, keep reading to find out!
You don’t need to let your routine slip and if you do… you just know that when January rolls around you’ll feel inclined to get back into things. It’s still winter, though, so you tell yourself you’ll dedicate yourself to exercise in spring… we all know how that goes, get your summer body ready only to find that it’s winter again and you’re in the same position again.
1. Jot It Down In Your Diary
That’s right; make sure you schedule your workouts. On Sunday afternoon sit down to plan the week ahead of you and as you write in your meetings and events make space for your exercise routines. Carve out 30 minutes a day on at least four days of the week. It means you are more likely to stick to your schedule because once they’re in the diary they are locked in! It’s a great way to build your routine and your motivation.
2. Get Some Sleep
Our caveman ancestors went to bed as the sun set and got up when it rose. Studies suggest that we should still be following that schedule, however, modern life is a little bit different than it was in those days. You should be getting to bed at a decent hour, though. Not only will you get a better night’s sleep, but your body will fall into a healthy routine and you’ll find it easier to get out of bed in the morning, even on cold wintery mornings. Your body will have time to recover and your muscles will repair, so you’ll start to see the fruits of your labour much quicker than if you’re burning the midnight oil constantly.
3. Results Will Drive You
There’s something motivational about starting to see your body change shape. You might not achieve your goals as quickly as you would hope, but you will start to see improvements within two weeks or so of working out. This is the kind of change that stimulates your motivation and helps you set that routine in stone.
4. Seek Inspiration
Whether you’re on a keto diet and driving it with exercise or just eating healthily, one of the biggest ways to inspire yourself is by reading up on fitness and health websites. There are a ton of people out there who are on the same journey as you and it can be really motivational to see just how far some of those people have come by following the same path you are on right now.

5. Exercise Gets You High
No, it really does. It boosts those feel good endorphins and leaves you feeling full of energy and as happy as can be. That feeling is addictive and once you start to experience it you will only want to do it more and more. That may just explain why you feel a total buzz after your workout and have plenty of energy to tackle the rest of your day. That is, of course, if you work out in the morning. Any time of day is fine, but if you can schedule yours for the morning that would be ideal.
Make sure you’re mixing up your workout location and the exercises that you practice. It can get boring looking at the same four walls and repeating the same machines over and over. So, mix things up. Not only will it help stimulate your brain, but it will keep your body interested. Once you repeat the same old workouts your body becomes used to them and it just forms a habit. While it may be a good habit, it isn’t going to have the same impact on your performance and body as it did initially.
It’s also important to look good and dress the part. You’re going to feel more motivated and more likely to work out if you invest in some decent workout gear. Once you pull that on you will be mentally ready to tackle any workout. It also makes exercising more comfortable when you’re dressed properly.
